Friday Favorites - Birthday Party Edition

Friday, July 17, 2015

It has been a while since I have done a Friday Favorites post, but when better to start than when I have birthday parties to talk about. If you know me at all, you know that I love to plan a party!

My kiddos are only 2 days apart, so the first week in July tends to be chaotic as we celebrate both of them. I like to make their day special for them with decorations, presents, food and fun!

This year with the second floor of the house going on soon, I wanted things to be more low key than they have been in years past. These were the smallest birthday celebrations we have done so far, but the kids said they were their favorite!

First up, Olivia turns 9!

She woke up on her birthday morning to decorations, her requested breakfast (Cocoa puffs) and her gifts.

She was super excited to go through the streamers

Olivia loves to read and is into reading Nancy Drew, so we decided on a Nancy Drew detective theme to the day. She didn't really have a party as much as she had some friends celebrate her day with us, and it was perfect!

She was able to invite three friends to join us for dinner out at Olivia's choice, Friendly's! We had an ice cream cake right there at the restaurant! So easy!

After cake, I gave the girls this message....

Once we got home they had about 5 clues to solve to find the basket of goodies

Example of one of the clues!

They found the basket in the oven and it included:

The Nancy Drew movie
Microwave popcorn
Popcorn bags
Snack size Skittles
The Favors
I forgot to take a pic of the basket, but the favors were a Nancy Drew book with a painted shell tied to them with the girls name on them. They were really cute and the girls loved them!

We popped in the movie, I popped popcorn and gave them all water, they watched the movie and chatted and when it was over we called it a night!

Super simple get together and the girls had a great time, I think! I know Olivia loved it!

There were mustaches to put on when they found clue 2!

The next day, we had a family party, where we celebrated both kiddos with our families. This was just an evening celebration with just cupcakes and ice cream!

Then it was Owen's big day! Owen turns 5

He woke up to his streamers, decorations, breakfast (fruit loops) and presents!

Owen wanted a monster truck party. He was very particular and matter of fact about who he was inviting to his party and he never changed his mind. So the guest list was small and it was really the perfect amount of kids. I was terrible at taking pictures though, so there aren't a ton, unfortunately.
When the kids arrived they came to the "body shop" and got some temporary tattoos.(no pics)

Then they put together some wooden puzzles. The girls had crowns and the boys had monster trucks, of course. There were markers and stickers to use for decorations.

Then it was time to race!

I asked Mike to build a race track for the kids to race down their monster trucks. Each of the kids received a monster truck as a party favor. I expected like a piece of slanted plywood, but I should have known better than that. Mike built a super cool race track with rain gutters and the kids loved it!

There was lots of racing, some of it was somewhat organized, but mostly they would just run up and send their trucks down, no one cared who won, they were just having a blast!

Then we had pizza for dinner, cake and ice cream, presents and finally a pinata!

I gave each kid a bucket with their name on it. Inside was the monster truck favor, their wooden puzzle and they put their candy from the pinata inside and took it all home!

We had some monster truck plates, but mostly stuck to racing checks and black, white and red (the colors from one of his favorite monster trucks) at the party for the decorations!

It worked out great, it was super simple and Owen loved it!

    1. They were fun! They were low key compared to some of their other parties. I didn't make cakes this year and just had a lot less decor. It was so much less work for me!

    1. Thanks, Amy! Putting the name labels on the buckets was a last minute decision and I was so glad I did it!
