I have mentioned on the blog before that I still did not know what I wanted to be when I grew up. I have been and still am, perfectly content with my mom job! With that being said though, my kids are getting older and I want to do something for me. But, I want that to be super flexible because I still want to be home when the kids get home from school and as much as possible, meaning pretty much always, on vacations and summers! I had pretty much decided that it would be very difficult to find exactly what I wanted and hadn't really been trying, but remember I am pretty content, so I was OK with this. I stay plenty busy when the kids are gone and still don't feel like I have enough hours in my day so I am certainly not going to add something in that I don't enjoy or that keeps me away from the kids. Doesn't make sense, right?
Let's back track now to last spring. My cousin was buying a new house. She sent me the link of a house she was going under contract with and said, "please help!" I need you to come down and help me decorate and organize this new house. I was super excited, looked through all the pictures and was thinking about what I would do with the space. I was laying in bed that night thinking about what I would do with her house and got to thinking, I wonder if I could take a course on interior decorating or design?
My cousin wasn't the first one to like my decorating style, even though my house was tiny, I did keep it nicely decorated, organized and it had a very cozy feeling that people liked. But, I certainly don't know all the tips, tricks, rules of design, so I wondered if I could learn them??!!
In bed I pulled out my phone and started doing some research and there were a few online courses for interior design. I told Mike what I was thinking and he was like, do it! Just like that, no hesitation. I had thought about going back to school for various things over the years, but always thought, ugh I don't want to do school again. This feeling was totally different, this topic of information I could not wait to learn about!! I didn't hesitate at all! I even remembered that waaay back in middle school, I did a report on what I wanted to be when I grew up and I interviewed and reported on an interior designer. Somewhere along the way, I started to enjoy science and thought I wanted to go the medical route, but here I was coming full circle back to interior design. Who would have thought?
I did my research on a few of the programs and ultimately decided that New York Institute of Art And Design was the right course for me. I have been very happy with the coursework and the staff!
Now, I have kept this a secret for a long time, telling only my closest friends and family for the most part, for a few reasons.
1) I change my mind A LOT! I wanted to be sure that this was going to stick before I made any big announcements!
2) There are certain people I know that are going to take this information and laugh and joke about it because I have thought of and tried so many things and had so many jobs in my life, and ultimately don't stick to them because they aren't what I want. I laugh along with them because don't get me wrong, it is funny, but I didn't want to hear the jokes until I knew for sure I was where I wanted to be! (If you want a little background on the things I have tried or wanted to be, read this post!)
3) Lastly, I wanted to be sure that I could do this school thing again. It has gone much slower than I want, but I am going to be picking up the pace here to get it all done by next February. And I am doing really well! There are 6 units and I got an A on the first one. The second unit I have something I have to fix on one part, but the rest of the projects, I had an A+ on, so I think I can do this!
I absolutely love doing this work! So you will see a few new types of posts on the blog starting now that I have made this announcement. Last summer I redid my nieces room for her birthday. She loves the way I decorate my house and asked for me to do her room for her, so of course I jumped at the chance. I took before and afters and I want to share them! Also, if you have been following along with me, you know that we just underwent a HUGE renovation and I have a ton of finishing touches and decorating to do on each room of my home. I will be posting my inspirations and ideas for each room and of course before and afters (when each space is finally finished)!
I am so excited to get this out there!! I hope you will enjoy following on this new journey because this is what this blog is about, my journey through life. Now my journey includes a possible new career or at the very least a hobby and a beautiful home!
Till Next Time!
